Spring has sprung...It's here, It's here!
I thought I would spruce up my mantle with a little spring decoration and this is what I came up with...
Kinda sweet, huh?
This is what I used to make it....
Unfinished Wooden Birdhouse,
I got mine from JoAnn for $1
Mod Podge{not pictured above}
Craft Paint
I used "Mississippi Mud" Americana Acrylic Paint for the first coat, and an "oops" paint in a grey/blue for the top coat
Scrapbook Paper
Paint Brushes
To start...Hire an assistant to paint the entire piece brown
{my assistant gets paid in hugs and kisses}

Next, I painted the birdhouse with the top coat...the grey/blue paint. Once it was dry, I cut scrapbook paper to fit the roof and painted Mod Podge on the design side of the paper. I then placed the paper design side down and smoothed it out...
I let the Mod Podge dry for about 3 hours or so...and then I soaked my fingers in a bowl of water and slowly started to rub the paper away....
As the paper starts to roll away, you will see that the design of the paper has been transferred to the wood. It's a pretty magical process and I get excited every single time I do this technique.
I like that it has a smooth painted on look rather than a bulky paper look when using the traditional Mod Podge decoupage technique
After all the paper has been removed, I painted a layer of Matte Mod Podge to finish and protect the piece....
I added a sweet little bird charm and called it done!
What do you think??
Are you as happy as I am that Spring is here?!

Ack - this is what I'm doing today. I'm so excited. I have never heard about that little scrapbookpaper/mod podge trick but I'm going to try that too. I'll let you know how I make out. Awesome tutorial.
ReplyDeleteWhat a Qt assistant ;) That turned out great. Love the vintage-y, weathered look. I am going to have to try some mod podge one of these days...
ReplyDeleteThat is so stinkin' cool! I've seen you post about this technique before, and I really want to try it. As soon as I get my life back after we get into a new house, I'm totally going to do this. I wish we could have a craft playdate! Wouldn't that be fun!
ReplyDeleteAdorable bird house and charm! Your little man is adorable too!
